Inside, the fort complex has temples, granaries, secret passages, and the palace of Obavva – a legendary woman warrior.

  • Sasivekalu Ganesha- Sasivekalu Ganesha, meaning "mustard-seed Ganesha," is a gigantic (over 8 feet tall) statue of Lord Ganesha carved from a single boulder. Its sheer size and detailing showcase the artistry of the Vijayanagara-era sculptors. It’s set in a small open-air enclosure on Hemakuta Hill.

  • Virupaksha Temple- Virupaksha Temple is the spiritual heart of Hampi, and it’s one of the oldest functioning temples in the region. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, its gopuram dominates the entire Hampi skyline. The temple is believed to have been built in the 7th century.
  • Hampi Bazaar- Hampi Bazaar is an ancient marketplace now lined with ruined pavilions that once formed the bustling market. A part of the area still functions as a market, from where you can pick up souvenirs during this tour to Hampi from Bangalore.
  • Kadalekalu Ganesha- Kadalekalu Ganesha is a 4.5-metre (15-foot) high statue carved out of a huge boulder. The name originates from the resemblance of its belly to Bengal gram. Made by skilled Vijayanagara artisans, it’s one of the largest sculptures in Hampi.
  • Krishna Temple- Krishna Temple was built by the Vijayanagara ruler Krishnadevaraya in 1513. Its Bala Krishna idol, representing infant Lord Krishna, was brought from Udayagiri to celebrate the king’s victory. But that idol is now in the Chennai Museum.
  • Lakshmi Narasimha Statue- Lakshmi Narasimha Statue (also known as Ugra Narasimha) is the largest monolithic sculpture in Hampi. Here, Lord Narasimha (the half-man, half-lion avatar of Vishnu) is depicted in a seated meditative posture. Goddess Lakshmi was also carved on the lap, but it was destroyed.
  • Badavilinga Temple- Badavilinga Temple (or Shree Badavilinga Gudi) is a small but incredible temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Badavi means poor woman, and it’s said that a local woman commissioned the shrine. The Shivalinga here stands about 3 metres high, and it’s submerged in water.

Day 3: Hampi Sightseeing

  • Vijaya Vittala Temple (Stone Chariot)- Vijaya Vittala Temple (Stone Chariot) is considered the crown jewel of Hampi. Although it’s said to have been built by the Vijayanagara King Devaraya II, the complex was expanded during the reign of Krishnadevaraya. The Stone Chariot in the courtyard is its most iconic attraction.
  • King's Balance- King's Balance (or Tula Bhara) is an ancient stone-carved balance scale. It was used by the Vijayanagara kings to weigh themselves in precious jewels and distribute those as charity. While the balance itself is missing, the 5-metre-tall frame still stands like an archway.
  • Lotus Mahal- Lotus Mahal is a two-storey palace, with a dome carved like a lotus bud, in the Zenana Enclosure complex. The entire area was built for the royal women of the Vijayanagara Empire. And the palace was believed to have been built specifically for their leisure and entertainment.
  • Elephant Stables- Elephant Stables are domed chambers built side by side in an elongated rectangular building. These chambers were reserved for elephants used in royal processions and festive ceremonies. Adjacent to the stables were rooms for elephant mahouts (keepers).
  • Hazara Rama Temple- Hazara Rama Temple (meaning thousand Rama) is said to have been a private place of worship for the Vijayanagara royal family. It has numerous Ramayana panels on the temple walls, depicting scenes from the Hindu epic.
  • Queen's Bath- Queen's Bath is a large, ornate bathing structure built by the Vijayanagara king Achyuta Raya. It’s a luxurious bath with a deep pool surrounded by arched corridors and projecting balconies. And it’s believed to be used as the private bathing chamber of the king and his queens.
