Sulthan Bathery | Weekend Getaway Break from Bangalore

Located in the Wayanad district of Kerala, on the Kozhikode- Mysore National Highway, Sulthan Bathery makes for an interesting weekend gateway with mesmerising natural settings and historical monuments along with religious places to visit. Earlier known as Ganapativatom, Sulthan Bathery is a small town which offers a perfect setting to spend few memorable days of your life. The current name of the town is after Tipu Sultan of Mysore who captured the Jain temple during the 18 th century. The captured Jain temple was then used as a battery. The town has two other Jain temples - Ganapati Temple and the Mariyamman Temple which also attract lots of tourists. Situated at a height of 1000 meters above MSL with lofty hills and beautiful valleys around, the place has captivating setting to offer its tourists with.

Places to tourist interests:

Jain Temple:One of the major tourist attractions in Sulthan Bathery is the Jain Temple which was constructed in the 13 th century. The place has not just religious but also also historical significance. The place has been important for Hindu and Jain and was later used as a battery (ammunition store) after Tipu Sultan captured the temple. The stone carvings in the temple are worth looking at.

Edakkal Caves:Located at a distance of 16 km from Sulthan Bathery, on the Ambukuthi Mountains, Edakkal caves is a set of three caves said to be one of the earliest signs of human settlement. Located at a height of 000 m above MSL, these caves has many ancient stone scripts, various animal and human figurines, symbols and ancient weaponry figures drawn on the walls. these inscriptions date back to over 7000 years old. Similar ones have been found only Styria in the European Alps and in few African places.

Ganapathi Temple::The Ganapathi Temple in Sultan Bathery is almost eight century old and is an important place for Hindus. The temple, located in the heart of the town attracts hordes of devotees every year. Because of this temple, the town was earlier called as Ganapativattom.

Mariyamman Temple: Gifted Pazhassi Raja to the tribal people so at to thank them for fighting the British, the Mariyamman Temple is an crucial sight for tribal living in the area. They strictly follow the rituals and maintain the sanctity of the temple.

Ambalavayal Heritage Museum:Situated at a distance of 12 km from Sulthan Bathery, the Ambalavayal Heritage Museum is one of the largest archaeological museums in the State. The museum has artifacts belonging to 2nd century such as ancient stone weapons, hunting equipments, clay sculptures, etc to offer its visitors with. The stone engravings called as Hero Stones portraying the valorous feats of the ancient tribal warriors, also make for an interesting sight.

The climate here is pleasant throughout the year. However, the best time is to visit during summer season that is from the month of June – October when most parts of the country face heat.
