Located near the city Market, Tipu Sultan Fort, another important sightseeing place of Bangalore, dated back to the year of 1537. It was built by the founder of Bangalore Kempe Gowda. However, later this fort was extended by Tipu Sultan, the then emperor of Mysore.
This fort has many important historical incidents associated to it. Hyder Ali, father of Tipu Sultan has imprisoned David Baird and various other British officers here at the fort. This place has witnessed the fight of Mysore Emperors with the British Governance.
The fort does present a mesmerizing architecture. It has been designed by seeking inspiration from the Islamic style. What makes this fort different from other Islamic forts is the presence of Ganapati temple inside it which has been preserved well.
With a perimeter of close to one mile, this fort is built of solid masonry. It has been surrounded by a wide ditch which has 26 towers around it. These towers have been places at regular intervals. There is pettah which lies in the north and has a circumference of several miles. The fort has proper protection against any kind of attacks.
Now if you visit, only relics of the forts can be seen as the British after conquering Bangalore started destroying it. The dismantling of the fort was started in the year of 1791 which continued till 1930s. Amongst the remnants of the fort you can see Delhi Gate and remains of 2 bastions.
The Palace of Tipu Sultan lies within the vicinity of the Fort. Thus a visit to fort is a must as it gives you the opportunity to admire both the monuments at the same time.
