Where is the Visvesvaraya Museum in Bangalore?

Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum is located in the heart of the city, adjoining the verdant and scenic Cubbon Park. It’s a constituent unit of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), and it’s their headquarters for southern India. The museum is in a modest building that houses various industrial products and engines.

History of Visvesvaraya Technology Museum

The idea of the Visvesvaraya Industrial & Technological Museum Bengaluru traces back to 1958. It came from the mind of a visionary journalist and nationalist, B. N. Guptha. Inspired by institutions in the West, such as the Smithsonian in the US, he envisioned a similar museum in this city.

The museum was officially opened to the public on July 14, 1962, by India’s Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Initially, it functioned primarily as an industrial museum displaying various industrial products and engines. On July 27, 1965, the first thematic science gallery, Electrotechnic, was inaugurated. That day is regarded as VITM’s foundation day.

In 1978, Sir M Visvesvaraya Museum in Bangalore came under the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM). And NCSM made VITM its nodal centre for South India, apart from significantly ramping up the activities in the museum. Over the decades, the museum has grown into one of the major tourist attractions in Bengaluru, drawing millions of visitors.
